Q: I have Windows XP and the game will not play.
A: Unfortunately Colin McRae Rally was not designed to work under Windows XP. The game (as detailed on the box) was tested under and supports Windows 95 and Windows 98. It also runs satisfactorily under Windows Me.

We are aware, however, of an unofficial program that does seem to allow the game to work under Windows XP. We do not support this program nor can we guarantee that it works. Nevertheless you might like to try it. Please see the Downloads section at the bottom of this page and install the XP Patch.

Q: Experiencing miscellaneous technical problems?
A: If you are experiencing technical difficulties with Colin McRae Rally, the Game Update patch in the Downloads section on this page should help you overcome these problems.

Q: I have an I-Force Force Feedback steering wheel, yet I get no feedback within the game.
A: Make sure you have the latest drivers from your wheel manufacturer that uses Version 1.18 or later of the I-Force drivers.

Q: I have an I-Force Force Feedback steering wheel, yet the wheel does not self-centre whilst I am driving.
A: Colin McRae does not self-centre at this time.

Q: Why is there no help.txt (readme) file on the CD?
A: The file you need is called EnglishReadMe.

Q: In Rally or Time Trial mode, I cannot select all the tracks?
A: You will need to play the game in Championship mode, finish sixth or better after the six New Zealand stages (three stages if playing in novice mode) and you will be allowed to progress to the next country, Greece. To progress to the next country after Greece, again you would need to finish in the top six. It is essential that you save your position and data so that you can access these stages in Rally or Time Trial Mode.

Q: I have completed the Expert Stage in the Rally School and I still can't access the Expert Stage in Championship Mode?
A: The Rally school basically helps you to control the car on various terrain and around different obstacles. Completing the Rally School will have no bearings on the Championship whatsoever. To obtain the Expert stage in Championship, you must complete the Intermediate Championship in 1st Place.

Q: After the video intro sequence the game returns to the desktop, and the program does not continue. or After the video intro sequence, the error message 'An error of type 2094 has occurred' is displayed.
A: The video sequence has failed to launch the game, run the game directly. To do this click on 'installpath/cmrally/rally.exe' (by default this would be 'C:\Codemasters\CMRally\Rally.exe').

Q: After the video sequence runs the program crashes with the message: 'This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down. Details - invalid page fault in module t29.dll'. or After the video sequence a message appears telling me that this application may only run from the original disk.
A: There is a problem with the copy protection on some of the early production Colin McRae CD's which occurs with some of the newest CD & DVD drives on the market. Run the Colin McRae Patch from Patches folder on the CD-ROM.

Q: The game freezes during play on Australia stage 3?or After the first stage of Rally School, my PC just freezes or returns to the Windows desktop?
A: Run the Colin McRae Patch from Patches folder on the CD-ROM.

Q: When I run the game, it tells me that the application executed an invalid instruction in Rally.exe.
A: This is a problem with certain Cyrix processors, the game was only tested with Intel processors and it appears that the game does not run on Cyrix P150+, 166+ and 200+. The game does run on PCs using AMD K6, K62 or Cyrix MX/MXII processors.. Unfortunately, there are no patches that will rectify this problem.

Q: I get through the menu screen/car setup options and just before the actual game appears my PC either freezes or returns to the desktop. or When I try to run the game, an error is given regarding the DDRAW.DLL file. or Using a Voodoo 2 accelerator, the in-game graphics are all white?
A: You probably have the wrong graphics card driver installed on your computer. Check which graphics card you have in your machine & that the driver for this card is correct. There are a number of reference drivers provided on the Colin McRae Rally CD, or you can download latest drivers from the graphics card manufacturers website. See the readme file on the Colin McRae Rally CD for more details.

Q: The menu keeps scrolling through the options, however, in game the controls are fine.
A: From the Windows desktop, click on Start, Settings and Control Panel, go to Game Controllers, click on the Advanced tab, at the bottom there should be a little check box - poll with interrupts enabled, you need to make sure that this box is NOT ticked.

Q: The game menu moves quite slowly.
A: This is a problem on some Matrox cards. Using 3.82 drivers from the CD will speed up the menus. (NOTE: this is likely to be not as recent as the driver you are currently using). Additionally, try switching the menu wipes option OFF in the graphics menu.

If you have the latest drivers, and would like to keep them, try this:

Go to Control Panel >> System >> Performance then click on the Graphics button.

You should now see a slider bar with Hardware Acceleration. Move the bar two notches to the left and click on OK then OK again.

Q: I am using a Videologic Apocalypse/ Matrox M3D graphics card, why are the graphics very blocky?
A: See the ReadMe file for a detailed explanation.

Q: I've got a Voodoo2 card with the latest drivers, and my PC hangs as it tries to load Stage 5 in Australia.
A: The problem you are experiencing is mainly due to the Voodoo2 card and their new drivers. We have found that, with these two combinations, the game seems to exit after stage 5 in Australia.

The solution to this is to simply reload the game at the stage prior to the crash, but set it on to the primary card, i.e. Device 0 and default. Once this stage has been completed, save the game and reload it but this time set it on to Device 1 and Default.

Now you can carry on with the game as normal.

Q: Using a Voodoo 2 accelerator, the in-game graphics are all white.
A: You will need to install the latest versionof DirectX. This is available on many Magazine cover disks or from the Microsoft website.

Q: I don't get any sound in the main game, however there is sound when displaying the videos.
A: From the Windows desktop, click on 'Start', 'Settings', 'Control Panel', then select 'Multimedia'. From the Audio - Playback, click on 'Advanced Properties' (if you have an Advanced Properties button). Set the volume to Low/Zero, then click Apply and OK. Then go back into Multimedia and change the volume back to high. Failing this you will need to update the drivers for your sound card from the card manufacturer's website.

Q: I installed the Toca 2 demo and now I get no sound effects or co-driver speech in Colin McRae Rally.
A: Toca 2 uses a newer version of the Qsound file 'qmixer.dll', this has been found to have certain incompatibilities with the previous version which Colin McRae Rally uses. To solve this problem find the Qmixer.dll file on your Colin McRae CD and copy it into the directory where you installed Colin McRae Rally, the sound should now work correctly.

Alternatively, download the Colin McRae Patch from the Codemasters website, which will also rectify this problem.
